Creepy Crawlers: The Moth

Yes, two weeks ago, I took another batch of caterpillar from our subdivision and put them in my jar. This time, it is different type than the previous one. I took them from the taro or gabi plant. it look like these:

After two days of feeding, it suddenly changed to a darker shade of green which is an indication that it will turn into a pupa. However, unlike the  first batch, the caterpillars collected some leaves and wrapped it around as added protection. After more than two weeks, it totally came out of the chrysalis. This time, it was not a butterfly but a brown colored moth.

Maybe, next time I will look for another variety of caterpillar and find out if it will turn into a butterfly or a moth.

Creepy Crawlers - Inside the Jar - Day 12

Day 11? I haven’t took a pic at this stage since the chrysalis looks the same other than the color becomes darker.

This morning, I was surprised that I got so view some black spots and it turned brown in color. I decided to bring it at work so I can document how it came out and turn to be a butterfly.

After having our breakfast, I peek on it again to figure how I am going to bring it but to my surprise, I noticed that there is something coming out so I immediately took the cam and take a picture of it. I feel lucky this time.

I got a chance to take short video clip of it but it was blurry.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 10

At last! The long wait is over. After ten (10) days, the one came out of its chrysalis as beautiful butterfly. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to document how it came out since I was upstairs sleeping. We were just surprised when Tita (Matt’s yaya) told us that there is already butterfly in the jar. She even witnessed how the butterfly slowly coming out of the cocoon. There is still one more, hopefully this time I can capture it.

I feel fulfilled upon seeing the butterfly coming out of the jar and fly away which makes me think to collect more caterpillars and wait for them to turn into colorful winged insects.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 9

I noticed that there is already a dark area on the one that turned to a pupa. Maybe it is the wings and in the next day it will come out and ready to fly while the other one seems nothing changed.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 7 and 8

After 8 days, the "creepy crawlers" were still silently transforming themselves into a beautiful butterfly. I hope that I can document them upon coming out of their shell.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 5 and 6

I was right on my previous post that in the afternoon the other one will turn into its pupa stage. Here they are now, silently doing something inside their chrysalis.

I guess it will be fun to make a guess what will be the color of the butterflies when they came out. My guess is yellow.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 4

The first one was still silently "sleeping" inside its chrysalis while the other one seems already found its best place to hibernate and enter the next stage of the life cycle. Most Probably this afternoon, I can find another cocoon. I am really excited to see butterfly inside the jar.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 3

Still in the pupa stage while the other one still keeps on eating but seems to move slower compared yesterday. Perhaps, it will also start to locate itself and will turn into to its cocoon. According my colleague (a biology graduate) it will take about two weeks until it will completely transform into a butterfly.

I am so excited and hopefully I can capture it while the butterfly comes out of its cocoon.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 2

The larger one seems to positioned itself already and will start the stage – pupa. It seems to be idle too. The other one is still active on eating leaves (no pictures for this one because I did not got a clear shot of it).

At night, I was surprised that the larger one has already wrapped itself and turned into a cocoon while the other had grown much compared to its size in early morning.

Creepy Crawlers: Inside the Jar - Day 1

On my previous post on Captured Moments about the Creepy Crawlers, I mentioned that I will be going to collect the caterpillars and place it in a jar and let them grow until they transform into a beautiful butterfly.

This morning, I was fortunate that they are still there so I transfered them in a plastic jar. Hopefully, they will survive there and I will be able to witness how they transform into a colorful winged insects.

The caterpillars in a jar (the other one is hiding in one of the leaves)
